Anglo-Saxon Chronicle c.793 Cited in “Such an Inroad from the Sea”

A small fleet of Danes, numbering three fasts ships came unexpectedly to the coast and this was their first coming. Hearing of this, the king's official, then staying at the town called Dorceastre, leaped on his horse and with a few men hurried to the port, thinking they were traders rather than enemies, and imperiously commanded them to be sent to the royal vill, but he and his companions were immediately killed by them. The name of this official was Beadwheard.
