Tom Thomson, a member of the Group of Seven, shaving after coming out of the woods with a beard, Unknown [Ed Godin?], 1916, Library and Archives Canada/Bibliotheque et Archives Canada, C-007900, Library and Archives Canada notes this photo was created at Grand Lake. Achray is located on Grand Lake, which was where Ed Godin was working as a Park Ranger in 1916. Thomson would stay with Godin at times during the summer of 1916, painting a sign to hang over the entrance to Godin's shack. Note: The title this image is filed under in Library and Archives Canada is incorrect. Thomson was never a member of the Group of Seven, which was formed in 1920, three years after Thomson's death

J’ai fait très peu d’esquisses cet été puisque je trouve que les deux emplois ne se marient pas très bien. Ce serait bien si nous étions deux artistes ou peu importe comment on nous appelle, mais les autochtones ne comprennent pas pourquoi nous peignons. Ce serait bien de prendre une photo, mais la peinture qu’on en fait est affreuse. Lorsque nous voyageons à deux un transporte le canot et l’autre les bagages et il n’y a pas de place pour le matériel à esquisses quand nous sommes garde-feu.
Nous n’avons pas encore été renvoyés, mais j’espère être libéré dès maintenant.
