The Condemned

The British Colonist
February 6, 1862

"Charley," the Cowichan Indian convicted of the murder of Thomas Holmes, will be hanged on Saturday in front of the barracks. The necessary arrangements for his execution have been commenced. Not the least hope of Executive interference in this case is entertained; indeed there is hardly a person in town who would be willing to sign a petition in his behalf. "Charley" is receiving the attentions of a Catholic priest. He seems in good spirits, and says he could die perfectly happy if "Tom," the

Indian who assisted him in the perpetration of the murder, was to be hanged by his side. "Tom" is kept in close custody and will be tried at the next Assizes.
