The Frozen Man, a.k.a. Gamby

In December 1859, a man almost frozen to death was found in the middle of the woods, several kilometers from any town, by a lumbering party on their way back to their home in Chipman Parish for the Christmas break. He has been called the "Iceman", the "Frozen Man" and many other names such as Gamby, Aralamo, Ellerimo, Lemo Bellamy as well as the "Frozen Italian". While in the care of the Overseers of the Poor in Chipman, he seems to have developed gangrene in both his legs. To relieve him of the pain and to save his life, he was taken to Gagetown in March 1861 where Dr. Henry Peters amputated both his legs. Back in Chipman, he was housed with the Gallager family. The story of the Frozen Man ends in the fall of 1863, when he was transported away from Chipman Parish where the ratepayers deemed his upkeep too high an expense.
