About Private Letters
Correspondence between individuals are important primary documents. Usually composed as private communications that were never intended to be read by anyone other than the addressed recipient, letters can provide a window in the private thoughts, emotions, and intended actions of people. These sources can usefully be compared to official statements in the press or official correspondence and often present a very different account than the public version of events.
