En tant qu’agent d’émigration pour la Canada Company, il encourage les Irlandais protestants à s’installer dans le Huron Tract. Plus tard, des colons irlandais catholiques comme les Donnelly élisent aussi domicile dans le canton de Biddulph. La famille Hodgins joue un rôle important à Lucan et dans les environs.
