Mathieu Léveillé

Condemned to death in Martinique, this Black slave is delivered from his sentence when bought by the King and sent to Canada in the fall of 1733. He is to be the torturer or executioner for the high court. Angélique is therefore tortured and executed by another Black slave. Nicknamed “le Martiniquais”, he was given by the authorities the Christian and French name of “Mathieu Léveillé”.
