Nicolas-Auguste Guillet de Chaumont

Born in France around 1695, Nicolas-Auguste Guillet de Chaumont landed in Nouvelle-France as a soldier, but all the same has somewhat of an education. He became a notary and assumes with little distinction the duties of clerk, king’s prosecutor and lieutenant general (judge) in Montréal. He does not excel at his tasks and it is possible that he is, as noted by Intendant Gilles Hocquart, a “very narrow-minded man.” He is one of the four counsellors called in to advise the lieutenant general concerning the guilt of the accused and the sentence to be imposed on her.
