The Conseil Supérieur

This court of justice also had the power to adopt regulations applicable to New France, since separate legislative and legal powers did not exist under the French regime. Created and given the name of Conseil souverain when New France became a royal province in 1663, it took the name of Conseil supérieur in 1719. The seat of the Conseil supérieur was in the city of Québec, and it served as the highest court of justice in the colony. All sentences of capital punishment were automatically appealed to the Conseil supérieur.
