The Hôpital-Général

Founded in 1692 by François Charon de la Barre, the Hôpital-Général was an asylum for the poor, the infirmed and the mentally ill. The building was located at the southwest end of the city, just beyond the fortifications. The institution fell into a state of decline and was burdened with financial difficulties following the death of Charon in 1719.
