Second interrogation of Angélique in the criminal seat and confrontation with Amable Lemoine Monière, in the presence of counsellors Adhémar dit Saint-Martin, Gaudron de Chevremont, Guillet de Chaumont and Lepailleur de Laferté, audience of 9 in the morning, 4 June 1734.

The year seventeen hundred thirty-four, The fourth of June, Nine in the morning, We Pierre Raimbault, king's counsellor, Lieutenant General Civil Et Criminel at the seat of the Jurisdiction Royal of Montreal, Having Made Our way To the Chambre Du Conseil where Were also present Maistres Jean Baptiste Adhemar, Guillet de Chaumont, Gouldron de Chevremont and Lepallieur royal notaries of our Jurisdiction, practitioners called forward as Counsellors, upon examining the Criminal trial Conducted Extraordinarily at the Request of the King's Prosecutor Against Marie Joseph angelique Negress who Was escorted by the Gaol keeper

of the said Gaol, Who having been made to take her place On the criminal seat took the oath to Speak the truth On the facts put forward to Her by Us, following which We Interrogated Her as does Follow.

Interrogated as to her name, Surname, age, status And Residence

Said to be named Marie Joseph Surnamed Angelique aged twenty-nine years or So Negress born in portugal belonging to the said widow francheville, residing with Her prior to the Fire.

Interrogated to state to us where She obtained The eight knives And the pair of scissors Found On Her When she

Was arrested.

Stated that the packet of Knives of the Said dame francheville Having come undone in the hospital garden And seeing Everyone going to Gather them up, She took the said Knives And placed them in a Box in the said Garden And Sister Boutier having found Them wanted to Take them away Believing that it was someone who had Hidden Them to keep Them, And She who is responding told her that they Were those of the said dame francheville, that it was She who had Gathered Them to return them to Her And she placed them in Her pocket.

Interrogated as to why she did not Return the said Knives to the said dame francheville.

Stated that she had not Yet Gone to the House of the said dame francheville, at the Time of her

arrest, that the scissors Are the ones Used by the said dame francheville, And that she who is Responding, having on the day of the fire cut out a pair of leg Coverings for Herself with the Said scissors She had placed them in Her pocket.

And in that instant we Presented before Her The eight Knives And The pair of scissors And Interrogated her to tell us If She Recognised Them.

Stated that she Recognised Them And that among the said eight knives the Black-Handled small Knife Served as her own Kitchen Knife.

Interrogated and Required her to tell us How Many times the said thibault Entered the House of the said dame francheville On the eve of the Fire, And If thibault used the Knife to smoke.

Stated that he did not Enter either on The day before or Two days prior to the said Fire but only on The day of his release from the gaol.

Interrogated if She knows the two metal shovels Presented before her.

Stated that she Knows The smaller one to Be for the Chamber, and the larger One for the Kitchen.

Interrogated to tell us Which of the two shovels She used to carry embers when The little amable Moniere saw her with her Shovel in hand filled with embers, And going Upstairs.

Stated that she carried none Upstairs At All, neither in The morning nor in The evening.

Upon which response we had

come forward the Said amable Moniere, of Whom after the oath , we Asked If She Recognised The shovel with which She saw the Said negress carry embers just prior to the Fire, And then showed Her the said two shovels.

She stated that it was the large shovel that Was in the Kitchen, And holding it indicated it as such to us, with a demonstration of the manner In which the said negress carried it And This in the presence of the said accused. And having asked her if she was not mistaken, She told us no, And declared to not know how to Sign, as requested.

Was made known to Her the said accused that she is not Speaking The truth In saying that the said thibault Was not at the house of the said dame francheville either The day before or Two days prior to the Fire And having just stated to us on the Contrary that it was Seven

to eight Days prior to the said Fire, seeing that the Said thibault was not Released from the gaol until the eight of the Month of April at night although he still Slept at the said gaol, that he could not have gone numerous times morning And night to the House of the Said dame francheville, except on The ninth and Tenth, Day of the Fire.

Responded that it had been Seven to eight days that he had Been released from the gaol.

And at this very instant, We Were presented with The Register of the gaol on which are noted the Arrest and Release Days of the said thibault which are as does Follow “On the Fifth day of the month of March The man named thibault Was brought to the royal gaol of This city on the order of Monsieur Le Commissaire, by four musketeers and a sergeant, And Released on the eight of

April under the same order Signed Marchand.”

And the said accused persisted in Saying that it had been Seven or eight Days, that she had [not] spoken to the said thibault prior to the Fire.

A Reading to her done of the present Interrogation she stated that Her Responses Contain truth and persisted on it And declared to not Know how to Write or Sign, as requested, And Was instantly, the said accused, Remanded In custody to the Gaol keeper to Be Returned to Her gaol cell And the Knives and Scissors Placed in the hands of our Gaol keeper to Be entrusted to the clerk
