Third interrogation of Angélique, audience of 9 AM, 6 May 1734.

The year Seventeen Hundred thirty-four The six of May, at nine in the morning, We, Pierre Raimbault, King's counsellor, Lieutenant General of the Jurisdiction Royal de Montreal, Having made our way with our Clerk to the Chamber of the Gaol of This city, was brought before Us, by the Gaol keeper, the named Marie Joseph Negress of the lady widow francheville, prisoner, and We had her take the oath to tell the truth And proceeded with her Interrogation as follows.

Interrogated as to her name, nickname, age, status and residence.

Stated to be named Marie Joseph Negress aged twenty-nine years, Servant Slave of lady francheville, Residing prior to the Burning In her house on Rue St Paul.

Interrogated as to whether the Fire that cause

the Burning on the tenth of the last month Began in the roof of the house of the Said Lady francheville.

Stated that she does Not know if it started inside, but when a Cry of fire was heard, Having gone Outside, she saw the said Roof on Fire on the side nearest of Sieur Radisson's Chimney.

Interrogated as to where she was When the said Radisson Went up to the Attic to Throw water On the fire that appeared in the Pigeon-house.

Stated that she does not Know who went Up First, that she Knows Well that someone Went Up Calling for water, as She Stood in the Street.

Interrogated if prior to her fleeing from

her mistress’ Home last winter She had not said As She has done since, that she would have Burned the Said lady francheville And Sieur Moniere Because of the Reprimands And bad treatment inflicted by them on her.

Stated that she said this neither before nor after.

Interrogated as to whether it was true that on the eve of the Sunday Day on which She left with the Said Thibaut in flight towards New england, She had set fire to her Blanket while Sleeping that Night in the large room at Sieur Moniere, And the Said thibault had as well Set Fire to the bed where he Slept in the Said house of the said Sieur Moniere.

Stated that the fire started on her Blanket as she Slept, the said Blanket having touched the stove that Was fiercely hot,

that the Servant Awoke her And that the fire also began on the Blanket of the Said thibault asleep next to Two other men who No Doubt While Sleeping had Pushed it towards the fire.

It was pointed out to her that she is not telling the truth In denying with her Response that she And the said thibault had not voluntarily set fire to their said Beddings The night of Saturday to Sunday as on the same Sunday at night, They Had Disappeared Together, to Be found at the End of fifteen days in the Deep Woods behind Chateaugay.

Stated the Fire took place Only in the night of Friday to Saturday and that They Left only on the Sunday at seven thirty in the Evening.

Interrogated to tell us in Which House

they Retired To, upon Fleeing from the Home of the said Sieur Moniere, And How Long They Remained there prior to Taking Flight towards new england.

Stated that they entered no Houses, that they soon crossed the River to Longeüil; that the said thibault Led Her to a Barn far from the Houses And took from There Five to Six bread loaves that the Said thibault had there Hidden, And from there Made their Way to Chemin de Chambly, then Entered the Woods and Remained there the Night And a portion of the Next Day And that in the fifteen Days of their Journey and encampment of one week in the Woods, They entered no Houses.

Interrogated if Long Before their departure from This city

they had arranged to flee to new england.

Stated that Their arrangements had been Made while lady francheville Was at three Rivers And that they were awaiting the freezing over of the River [St-Lawrence River] facing the city to cross it On the Ice; And that when the Ice was Right They were eight days waiting for Accounts of the said Thibault to be Settled with the Said Lady francheville, that after the said thibault Had gathered bread for Their journeys he Determined to leave with her without Settling His Business, As They did the said Day of Sunday at Night.

A Reading was made to her of the present Interrogation to which she stated and Persisted that her Responses were truthful And Declared not to be able to Write nor Sign as Requested, And the said Marie Joseph was remanded into the Custody of the Gaol keeper, to be Returned to her prison cell.
