[stamp of DEPARTMENT OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE OF CANADA-REMISSION BRANCH-JUL 2 1935]

52155 TICKET OF LEAVE

OTTAWA, June 29, 1935.

Convict:— MARIE ANNE HOUDE, or GAGNON, No. H-600,
Kingston Penitentiary.

Crime:— Murder

Sentence:— Death - commuted to life imprisonment.

Date of Sentence:— From September 30, 1920

Age:— 44 years

Previous Convictions:— None.

On the 21st of April, 1920, the above named was found guilty of having caused the death of Aurore Gagnon.

During the last fifteen years her custodians have always reported her conduct and industry as excellent and exemplary.

Two years ago she was operated upon for cancer. Recent medical reports indicate that this convict is developing a critical state of health and that her life expectancy will be a matter of months at the longest, and the Warden, on the 25th instant, states in part as follows:-

"It will please be noted that Dr. Platt has discussed a feature of this case, touching and concerning a new treatment within the Cancer Clinic at the General Hospital, in confidence, and it is intimated that the use would not be considered in her case so long as she is a convict. It is suggested, however, that if this convict were free from the Penitentiary, and in a position to make her own choice, Dr. Platt might arrange to present her with the possibilities of the treatment, and with him he would have Drs. Connell and Jones of the clinic staff.

"I recommend this case for favourable consideration, in view of the almost hopeless condition at this time."

Having regard to all the circumstances, this would appear to be a case worthy of favourable consideration.

-2-

The undersigned has the honour to advise that Marie Anne Houde, or Gagnon, be released under the restraint of a Ticket of Leave (in order to facilitate the care and treatment necessary in her physical condition, all arrangements to be made to the satisfaction of the Warden of the Penitentiary.)
