The Stanleys were a prominent, powerful and wealthy family in Lucan. Led by Bernard, the family owned hotels, stores, a mill and other businesses in the community. In the 1850s Stanley forced the Wilberforce settlers off of their land. Protestant and Conservative, the Stanley family often fought with the Catholic Reform/Liberal Donnellys.
