O’Connor, Johnny

[ Drawing of Johnny O'Connor, This drawing originally appeared in the 1880 newspaper coverage of the Donnelly murders. It is reprinted in Donald L. Cosens, ed. Johnny O’Connor was a thirteen-year-old boy (his correct age) who stayed at the Donnelly homestead the night of the murders. He claimed that he was an eyewitness to the Donnelly murders and he became the key witness in the trial of James Carroll. In the months leading up to the first trial, O’Connor’s family home was burned. Johnny had to remain under police protection. Despite threats, he proved to be an able witness.
