Mowat, Oliver

[ Oliver Mowat, Unknown, University of Western Ontario Archives RC80686 ]Born in 1820 in Upper Canada, Oliver Mowat, a Presbyterian, began his law career in the law office of John A. Macdonald. He was a member of the Reform Party (and later the Liberal Party) and became a member of the Legislative Assembly in the 1850s. He then became a judge and from 1872 to 1896, Mowat served as Premier and Attorney General of Ontario. As a Liberal, Mowat had to be careful during the trial of James Carroll not to alienate Irish Catholic voters. In doing so, some believe he influenced the proceedings.
