Dear Sir,

re Lucan new sensation

I think this is a put up job, but of course keep this opinion to myself. It is quite possible that Robert Donnelly who is a foolish reckless fellow & made well nigh desperate by the course things have taken may have been inviegled into doing to something as wrong as charged against him, but there is no fear of William, who is a shrewd as man as I know, being drawn into so miserably concocted a plot as this. The feeling exhibited against the accused is intense & they have been dealt with very cruelly in my opinion, having been consigned for 3 days & nights to cells in the Lucan lockup which are altogether unfit for the occupation of human beings. This was done under the influence and by the direction of Wm Stanley who is principal owner of the mill, which the accused are charged with having attempted to set on fire. [...]

Yours truly,
Chas Hutchinson, Cty Atty
