Confrontation done By Us, pierre Raimbault King's counsellor Lieutenant General, Civil, Et Criminel at the Seat of The Jurisdiction Royal of Montreal at the request of the King's prosecutor, Plaintiff And accuser Against Marie Joseph angelique, Negress Slave of dame widow francheville, prisoner In the gaol of this city; of the witnesses heard at The Information done by Us on the fourteenth of April And This, In the Execution of Our ordinance of this Day […]

Chambers of the gaol of This city.

Had brought before Us by the Gaol Keeper the said accused whom we Confronted with dame therese de Couagne widow of the deceased Sieur francois poulin de francheville second witness [...] said they Know each other [...]

the Said accused stated that she has severe Reproaches to make Against the Said witness, And that she shall wish her ill will all of Her life, because during the whole of the Evening she concerned herself For [took care of] her, [but] On the onset of the fire she taxed Her with [accused her of] being the Cause of the fire.

This done we proceeded with a reading to the said accused of the deposition And Re-examination of the witness And having heard it, she Stated that she did not go up at all to the Attic on The day of the Fire except [only] in the morning with her mistress; that she saw not at all the said thibault on the Eve, that it Was more than eight Days previously, When the Said dame francheville Had gone to longue pointe. And the Said witness said that Her Deposition And Re-examination Are truthful; that the said Negress Came to bring food to the said thibault in the gaol Seven to eight Days prior to His Release And that it Was after her, the witness',

servant had left Her House, as demanded by the said accused; that when she the witness Learned that the said accused came to visit the Said thibault, She made reproaches to Her, Forbidding Her from doing so And [from] giving Him Anything. And the said accused stated that she gave him No bread at all but merely Half of a Gourgane Bean Remaining from the Fat Days [days when meat can be eaten]; that she only came to visit the Said thibault maybe five or six times, Two of which since the departure of the said Servant from the House of the Said francheville. And the said dame francheville said that all that she has just stated Is truthful; and said of the said Accused present that she heard her speak as stated in Her aforementioned deposition And Re-examination And Maintained this to the said accused. A Reading of the present Confrontation done to them, both persisted Each on their own Behalf, the Said dame francheville signed And the said accused Declared to not know how to sign, as Requested.
