Pierre Raimbault

Born in Montréal in 1671, Pierre Raimbault is the son of a master carpenter. He is in good favour with the Sulpicians, the seigneurs of the island of Montréal and curates of the parish of Montréal. He oversees the funds of the seigneury, becomes a royal notary and a surveyor, then is appointed king’s prosecutor and finally the sub-delegate to the Intendant in Montréal. Well educated, Raimbault has the dual responsibility of being the civil and criminal lieutenant general (judge) for the Juridiction royale of Montréal. He has many family ties with numerous victims of the fire and with a number of witnesses. Raimbault himself has owned some twelve slaves, both Amerindian and Black.
