We Pierre Raimbault King's counsellor Lieutenant General, Civil Et Criminel, at the seat of the Jurisdiction Royal of Montreal, do let it be Known that having examined the Complaint filed by The King's prosecutor at This seat, plaintiff And accuser, Against The woman named Marie Joseph Angelique, Negress of Nation And Slave of dame Thereze de Couagne widow of Sieur françois poulin francheville, And the man named
Claude Thibault, Defendants accused of having set fire to the house of the Said dame widow francheville And Having Caused the Burning of part of This city, The night of the ten to eleven of April Last, At the bottom of which Is our Ordinance Granting Permission To inform of the facts contained in the Said Complaint And, under provision, to Ordain that the Said Negress And the said Thibault Be arrested And Taken to the royal Gaol of This city to Be heard And Interrogated On the facts
Contained therein; the report of The Arrest of the said negress by bailiff De Coste And the Imprisonment of her person as On The Register of the Gaol With Notice thereof served to the Said Negress, All on the said eleventh Day of April; Our Ordinance to call forth The witnesses on the same Day; Interrogation of the said Negress on the Twelfth Conducted before us and Containing her avowals Confessions And Denials, Beneath which Is our Signature, Communicated to the said King's prosecutor on the same Day; Findings by the said King's prosecutor On the thirteenth; Our ordinance Appearing Below,

To have Some witnesses Re-examined, summonses delivered to the said witnesses by the said De Coste, All Dated the said twenty-six Day of May; Summonses to [illegible word] the witnesses heard to proceed according to the previous summonses given for the re-examination And the Confrontation of witnesses with the said accused On the Twelve, fourteen, fifteen And seventeen and twenty-seven of the said month of May below which is our signature, communicated to the King's prosecutor; The Findings of the King's prosecutor of the 23rd of the said month of May; Interrogation on the said 27th of the Said accused On the Criminal Seat In the Chambre du Conseil and Containing Her avowals, Confessions, And Denials. given to the said witness to this effect on the Second of This month; our ordinance To Compel a witness to appear immediately in order to Be Confronted with the said accused, And The Confrontation of the said accused along with our ordinance Communicated to the King's prosecutor; Next the Findings of the said King's prosecutor, And another Interrogation of the said accused on the criminal seat in our said Chambre de Conseil, All taking place on This day.
And everything Considered, We have Declared the Said accused, Marie Joseph angelique Sufficiently guilty And Convicted of Having set fire to the house of dame francheville Causing the Burning of a portion of the city. In Reparation for which we have Condemned her to make honourable amends Disrobed, a Noose around her Neck, and carrying In her hands a flaming torch weighing two pounds
before the main door and Entrance of the parish Church of This city where She will be taken And Led, by the executioner of the high Court, in a Tumbrel used for garbage, with an Inscription Front And Back, with the word, Incendiary, And there, bare-headed, And On her Knees, will declare that She maliciously set the fire And Caused the Said Burning, for which She repents And Asks Forgiveness from the Crown And Court, and this done, will have her fist Severed On a stake Erected in front of the Said Church. Following which, she will be led by the said Executioner in the same tumbrel to the Public Place to there Be bound to the Stake with iron shackles And Burned alive, her Body then Reduced To Ashes And Cast to the Wind, her Belongings taken And Remanded to the King, the said accused having previously been subjected to torture in the ordinary And Extraordinary ways in order to have her
Reveal her Accomplices, And as for the said thibault we have ordained that the Re-examination of the witnesses will stand as Confrontation against the said thibault, so that after the torture of the said Negress, And her Interrogation Communicated to the King's prosecutor, with the procedure of Contumacy, and All reported, We will proceed with the Judgement of the said Contumacy; as is required.
